Featuring Resident Artist Nelly Gonzalez-Chan
Join us for a two-part painting workshop exploring the beauty of an autumn still life with Imperial Calcasieu Museum Resident Artist Nelly Gonzalez-Chan. Across the two sessions, students will learn how to develop a still life composition from observation and build an oil painting ontop of the initial drawing.
Part One | October 24 | 12–2 PM
We’ll begin with graphite, learning to observe, sketch, and develop a still life composition from an autumn themed arrangement.

Part Two | November 7 | 12–2 PM
Students will begin layering oil paint over their graphite drawing, exploring color, value, and the process of building a painting in layers.

No prior oil painting experience is required. Come ready to slow down, observe, and enjoy the process of creating from life. The Museum will provide all necessary supplies, so students do not need to bring anything with them. We recommend wearing clothing that can get a little paint on it.
Space is limited, so reserve your spot and join Nelly for two afternoons of autumn inspired drawing and painting!
Highlights: Community Exhibit Opportunity
One of the special parts of this workshop is that your finished work can continue its journey beyond the classroom! Artwork created during the Still Life Oil Painting Workshop will have the opportunity to be featured in our 2027 Community Exhibit, celebrating the creativity of artists and students within our community. Students who would like to participate may leave their completed artwork with the Museum until the exhibit. We can’t wait to see how each artist interprets our autumn still life!
