Haunted Histories Exhibit

Dates Available

Step inside Haunted Histories, an immersive journey into the legends, lore, and lingering mysteries of Southwest Louisiana. This one-of-a-kind exhibit brings together centuries of true crime, folklore, and firsthand accounts of the unexplained—blurring the line between documented history and the supernatural.

Discover the chilling stories behind iconic sites such as the John Reid House at 504 Ford Street, where echoes of the 1910 Great Fire and a prisoner’s desperate escape are said to linger. Learn about the notorious Calcasieu Courthouse, forever linked to Toni Jo Henry—the only woman executed by electric chair in Louisiana—and the unexplained laughter, shadows, and phantom scents that persist within its walls.

Travel to rural parishes where legends grow even deeper:

  • The Gothic Hanging Jail in DeRidder, where condemned men left poems of despair and visitors still hear whispers on the spiral staircase.

  • Hyatt High School, once a bustling WPA-era schoolhouse and now a lonely shell alive with unexplained sounds and strange voices.

  • Big Woods Cemetery, believed to be Louisiana’s most haunted burial ground, where a church once stood as both spiritual refuge and target of repeated fires.

  • The eerie Ellis Hill and Barnes Creek regions, with lights that chase travelers, time anomalies, and cryptic relics buried in their forests.

Artifacts and interpretive panels illuminate the Victorian obsession with death and remembrance, including Memento Mori traditions such as hairwork jewelry, mourning wreaths, and life-like grave dolls. Scientific phenomena like St. Elmo’s fire, foxfire, ball lightning, and feu follet (marsh lights) are also explored—natural mysteries that may inspire supernatural tales.

Adding a modern dimension, the exhibit highlights the work of the Old No. 7 Society, Louisiana’s official TAPS Family Team. Their glossary of investigative tools and recorded EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) reveal how contemporary researchers document encounters with what many still call ghosts.

From documented disasters and infamous crimes to folk beliefs and modern investigations, Haunted Histories invites you to reflect on how memory, place, and mystery intertwine. Come see for yourself how the past still speaks—sometimes in whispers only the brave will hear.
